SV Werder Bremen is a German Bundesliga club and is one of the most popular and most successful teams in the entire country. The club was founded in 1899 as Fußballverein Werder. When German football was re-aligned under the Third Reich in the 1930's, Werder was placed in the Gauliga Niedersachsen. They had success early on, winning titles in 1934, 1936, and 1937. From the end of World War II and the founding of the Bundesliga, Werder remained one of the top clubs in northern Germany. They have won the Bundesliga 4 times (1965, 1988, 1993, 2004), taken home 5 German Cups (1961, 1991, 1994, 1999, 2004), the DFB-Ligapokal in 2006, and won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.

The club has also made UEFA Champions League appearances in 2004 and 2005, advancing to the round of 16 both times. Werder plays in the 43,000 seat Weserstadion in Bremen.
