D.C. United was one of the original MLS franchises and has far and away been the most successful. Their dominance in the mid-late 90's has carried over into the 21st century. The Red and Black have won 4 MLS Cups (1996, '97, '99, 2004), 2 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups (1996, 2008), 4 Supporters' Shields (1997, '99, 2006, '07), and a CONCACAF Champions' Cup (1998). D.C. United is also known for being the former home of young soccer sensation Freddy Adu, who has since moved on to Europe. RFK Stadium is always packed to capacity and is known as one of the toughest tickets to get in the MLS, and is also known as the most hostile enviornment for a visiting team to play in.

The club is currently led by captain Jaime Moreno, forward Luciano Emilio, and midfielder Ben Olson. In 2009 D.C. United will join Houston Dynamo, Chivas USA, and the New England Revolution as the MLS representatives in the inagural CONCACAF Champions League.
