The Columbus Crew was one of the orignal MLS franchises that began play in 1995 and were the first to play in their own soccer-specific stadium. The Crew were a relatively unsuccessful franchise until the 21st century when they took home the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and then later the 2004 and 2008 Supporters' Shields. Currently led by captain Frankie Hejduk and role players such as Emmanuel Ekpo and Pat Noonan, the Crew have one of the most talented teams in the league.

Due to their deep playoff run in 2008, tickets to get into Columbus Crew Stadium have been very hard to come by. Many questioned the decision to place a Major League Soccer franchise in Ohio's capital city, but their recent performance and fan support has re-assured MLS executives that it was an extremely good decision.
