Inspired by James A. Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific”, this Broadway musical is the story of men and women set adrift by WWII and its aftermath. Originally a hit in the 1950’s, the new production of South Pacific remains true to the original but has been subtly finessed so that the material is fresh and modern.

The story follows two inter-cultural couples who struggle to overcome their prejudices and accept each other without reservation. A supporting cast of varied personalities lends sparkle and wit to the plot as well as humor. The period costumes are precise and authentic, the staging so well done that it will completely immerse you into a tropical paradise. The use of slatted lighting realistically imitates the intimacy of island trysts and the romance of moonlit nights.

While South Pacific retains all the marvelous musical numbers of the original such as Some Enchanted Evening and Nothing Like a Dame. Two of the most famous songs, Bali Ha’I and Happy Talk, are rendered as seductions rather than the original innocent upbeat numbers. The change is a good one and infuses South Pacific with passion and energy.
