With both his grandfather and father played for the Rochdale A.F.C., it was to be expected that English boxer Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton had a trial for the Manchester City youth team. But after finding a local boxing club in Hyde, Hatton found that he enjoyed boxing better.
At 19, Hatton debuted to the world of professional boxer on September 10, 1997, by giving Colin McAuley a knock down in the first round. He then picked a habit of knocking his opponent down in their fights early rounds, being true to his nickname as The Hitman.
A two-time IBF and IBO light welterweight champion, a former WBU and WBA light welterweight champion, a former WBC, WBA, WBO Intercontinental Light Welterweight Champion and The Ring Magazine current Junior Welterweight Champion, Hatton hold an amazing record of 45-1 (32 KOs). He suffered his only lost, up to this day, when he met Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a fight for the WBC welterweight title on December 8, 2007 after his corner threw towel in on round 10.
For his services to the world of sport, notably in boxing, the English government awarded Hatton Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 2007’s New Year’s Honours List.
Ricky Hatton is scheduled to meet Manny Pacquiao who hold a record of 48-3-2 (36 KOs) in Las Vegas to defend his IBO Light Welterweight championship on May 2, 2009. Though Hatton has never been defeated in the light welterweight division before but Pacquiao is not an easy target. For even though he never been in light welterweight division before, he has ample experience from his career that spans on four different weight divisions.
