Marco Antonio “Baby-faced Assassin” Barrera is a seven time world champion in three different weight classes. Started boxing from a very young age, Barrera won Mexican National Amateur championship for five consecutive times in his amateur career and hold a record of 56-4.
Barrera professional career started at the age of 15 by knocking David Felix out in round two on November 22 1989, marking the beginning of a 43 fight winning streak. He won his first professional title, the Mexican National Super Flyweight championship, in 1992 and went on to defend the title for five times.
Barrera got his first world title, the WBO Junior Featherweight championship, on March 31 1995 in a fight against Daniel Jimenez and went to defend his title for four times, out of which three matches were won by KO.
On February 19, 2000, Barrera set for a unification bout of the WBO Junior Featherweight and WBC Junior Featherweight by challenging Erik Morales. Morales won the fight by a controversial majority decision though observer believes that Barrera should have won the match. Agreeing to the unjust nature of the decision, The WBO did something it never does before: reinstating Barrera as WBO champion. Barrera met Morales again on June 22, 2002 in a most anticipated rematch. This time, Barrera won the fight by a unanimous decision.
